Turning a cultural ecosystem into a living digital platform
How do you translate a place that lives, moves and breathes history into a digital experience that feels just as layered? For De Hallen Amsterdam, the challenge was to capture a unique urban ecosystem in a website that is functional on a daily basis, but at the same time makes the character of the place tangible.
De Hallen is not a single destination, but a fusion of culture, film, food and heritage. This versatility had to come together in one digital environment that provides direction, without simplifying. A platform that helps visitors navigate, discover programs and book tickets, while De Hallen's identity remains continuously present.
We developed a digital experience where brand and functionality coincide. The new visual identity forms the foundation, translated into a flexible web-specific color system that varies per visit, but always maintains peace and coherence. Architectural principles from the building itself form the basis of the interface, with a tight grid and rhythmic compositions that refer to the tram depot's industrial past.
Design language, typography and interaction have been deliberately used in a restrained manner. Not to impress, but to give space to content, program and movement. The website behaves like De Hallen itself: layered, dynamic and constantly changing, without ever becoming chaotic.
As a digital partner, we assisted De Hallen in translating their renewed identity into a future-proof platform. A website that not only informs, but reinforces the character of the place and grows with the rhythm of the city.
